Transfer News for Barcelona
For today’s transfer news, Barcelona is already making their move for possible transfers in the next transfer window in the summer. Barcelona’s international director Jordi Cruyff revealed that they already have off-season plans to sign several players, including Erling Haaland from Dortmund and Alvaro Morata from Atlético, for their centre-forwards, prompting the club to set their sights on free transfers in order to save transfer funds. Negotiations with Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen have already been initiated, with Barcelona optimistic for their possible transfers.
Alvaro Morata is one of Barcelona’s picks for the summer transfer window, currently on loan from Juventus to Atlético Madrid for La Liga. Barcelona is currently competing for the player’s attention with fellow Spanish football club Sevilla, with Atlético Madrid expressing their intent for Morata to stay permanently. Despite these clubs wooing for his signature, Morata has expressed his desire to transfer to Barcelona and has already begun negotiating a deal with Atlético to let him transfer during the summer. Juventus has not made any move to cement Morata’s stay with permanence, so Atlético may need to let Morata go to Barcelona.
Though Morata is pretty much a done deal considering the player’s eagerness to move, Haaland is a completely different story. The Norwegian is sought after not just by Barcelona, and with the team’s financial state at the moment, the dream of acquiring Haaland is becoming less and less likely. Haaland has expressed that should he join the La Liga (as opposed to the Premier League), his top pick would be Barcelona.
In order to afford him, Barcelona plans to sell 49% of their media company’s stakes, which is equivalent to a massive amount of equity. In doing this, they still maintain themselves as shareholders and still have the ability to run the company however they want. In addition, letting go of some of the club’s players is a possibility and will be a necessity for some financial leeway to secure Haaland. Ousmane Dembele has already been marked by Barcelona to move to PSG at the end of his contract this summer. Philippe Coutinho’s transfer to Aston Villa has already been finalised, and Antoine Greizmann marks the last to leave the club permanently with his transfer to Atlético Madrid. With these players out, Barcelona might just be able to afford Haaland and form their own dream team for La Liga.
For defence optimisation, Barcelona eyes Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen from Chelsea. By June, the contract with Stamford Bridge for both players will expire, and Barcelona will seal the deal with a pre-contract agreement. Chelsea captain Azpilicueta is close to signing a three-year contract with Barcelona, with things yet to be secured with Christensen, who seems to be considering other offers.
Azpilcueta’s departure to Barcelona, should the deal be finalised, will mark the end of his decade-long stay in Chelsea. With him in the club, he has managed to win the Premier League twice and the Champions League from 2021, alongside Christensen. Their exit from Chelsea may cause a major change in the club’s setup and gameplay.
The summer transfer window for 2022 will be on July 1 for the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1.
