For today’s transfer news, Barcelona faces off with Chelsea for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde for the summer transfer window, Barcelona manager Xavi confirmed. The Spanish club has disclosed that Kounde is one of their top picks to enhance their defence in light of some of their members’ departures. Chelsea had come very close in the transfer deal for Kounde with Sevilla last summer, but the deal fell through in the end due to their inability to match the £68.5million release clause for Kounde’s signature.
Barcelona Plans To Steal JulesKounde’s Transfer From Chelsea
Sevilla has disclosed that they have all the intention to sell Jules Kounde but only for the highest bidder. They continue to negotiate with Chelsea, but with Barcelona expressly planning to take the 23-year old centre-back from the Blues, Chelsea might have to step up their offer to seal the deal with Kounde. Initially, Chelsea was reported to be ‘confident’ that Sevilla would agree to a £42 million deal for Kounde. Things might not stay the same in light of Barcelona’s advances. However, Chelsea holds an advantage financially, considering that they spent very little on the January transfer window for new signings.
Kounde plays for Sevilla as a centre-back in La Liga and the France International Team. He debuted in Bordeaux and made his first appearance on 13 January 2018 in the Ligue 1 in an away win against Troyes. He signed with Sevilla on 3 July 2019 with a transfer fee of €25 million.
With Barcelona planning to take Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen upon the end of their contract this summer, Chelsea needs to lock Kounde away from Barca in order to regain a fortified defence for the next season. Declan Rice from West Ham United and Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco are Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel’s top picks, including Kounde.
Barcelona will be saying goodbye to some of their players this summer, namely Oscar Mingueza, Samuel Umtiti, and Clement Lenglet, hence the necessity for Kounde’s transfer. Aside from Kounde, Azpilicueta, and Christensen form part of their wishlist, and they are also eyeing a potential transfer with Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus. Their plan is to spend as little as possible for one defender and spend a hefty amount on another. With the amount set by Sevilla for Kounde, it may seem like Barcelona will be allocating their bigger half for Kounde, should Chelsea fail to match their bid again.
