ATK Mohun Bagan Qualifies for ISL Playoffs

ATK Mohun Bagan secured itself a spot in the semi-final playoffs for the Indian Super League on Thursday after winning their match against Chennaiyin at the Fatorda PJN Stadium. Their penultimate match was won by Roy Krishna with a single goal, boosting ATK Mohun Bagan up the ISL rankings and overtaking Hyderabad’s place in the leaderboards.

Hyderabad’s spot on top of the leaderboards has slowly declined due to COVID-19 infections that affected the overall performance of the team in their recent games. Jamshedpur now sits on top of the ISL rankings, with ATK Mohun Bagan closely behind in second place as they share a steady 37 points with Jamshedpur. With their losses, Chennaiyin has no hope of qualifying for the ISL semi-finals this season.

ATK Mohun Bagan Beats Chennaiyin

ATK Mohun Bagan had control of the game from the very first minute and kept Chennaiyin on their toes with the pressure they applied. The display of strength despite the continuous matches from ATK was particularly impressive and ultimately helped keep the team’s momentum as they quickly found opportunities for leads. The constant barrage of the forwards kept Chennaiyin on their defence. Roy Krishna had his attempts with the aid of Joni Kauko’s smooth pass inside the Chennaiyin box, but the first one missed the goal.

ATK had the obvious advantage in the game, but Chennaiyin’s energy steadily rose as the game progressed. ATK forwards were kept at bay by Chennaiyin’s in-form defence, and Rahim Ali had a shot that could have been a gamechanger for Chennaiyin but missed by a slim gap.

With Chennaiyin’s rigid defence, it seemed unlikely that ATK would score anytime soon during the first half until Joni Kauko sent a through ball to the Chennaiyin box, which Roy Krishna took as a redemption shot from his first miss in the game. He received Kauko’s pass and sent the ball to the back of the net, with Chennaiyin keeper Samik Mitra diving in vain to save the ball.

In the second half, Chennaiyin almost had their equaliser with Reagan Singh, but the Indian defender’s shot was deflected by the ATK defence before it could land on the opposite box. The game went on, and ATK kept their defence tight, and the game ended without any consolation for Chennaiyin.

Chennaiyin is already out of the running for this season, and ATK Mohun Bagan will face off with ISL leader Jamshedpur on 7 March 2022.
