ATK Mohun Bagan Wins With Manvir Singh’s Brace

ATK Mohun Bagan takes to the top two of the Indian Super League with their win against FC Goa. ATKMB scored once in each half, thanks to Manvir Singh’s brace, bringing the Kolkata-based football club to the second spot in the ISL rankings. With 29 points on their belt, ATKMB matches ISL leader Hyderabad FC. Their win against Goa marks their third consecutive win after their draw with Mumbai City on 3 February.

ATK Mohun Bagan Wins With Manvir Singh’s Brace

ATK Mohun Bagan took the lead by the third minute, with Liston Colaco sending the ball for Manvir’s first goal. Now on their defensive, and despite their early lead, ATKMB had their issues in the defence with Pritam Kotal and Sandesh Jhingan, whose performances at that time left much to be desired. It did not help that usual top players Hugo Boumous and Roy Krishna were out due to injury.

Manvir Singh's first goal for ATK Mohun Bagan

Goa had Alberto Noguera trying for an equaliser with the help of Jorge Ortiz, but ATKMB defender Tiri cleared away their attempt with his left foot. Ortiz had found many chances for their forwards to secure a goal, with their team taking control of the ball in the majority of the first half.

Their best bet for an equaliser came at the 34th minute with Anwar Ali’s booming strike for the goal past ATKMB’s defence. Amrinder Singh, however, managed to connect with the ball before it hit the net. At this point, the floodlights of the stadium went off, followed by a 10-minute stoppage.

In the second half, ATKMB turned the tides with another quick goal from Manvir Singh after Lenny Rodriguez swiped the ball from Goa midfielder Princeton Rebello and sent it to Singh. Four minutes later, he had a chance to turn his brace into a hattrick with another help from Liston, but this time, Goa goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh denied him the glory.

ATKMB’s barrage didn’t end there, with Joni Kauko and Manvir attempting another score. Then, Colaco tried to find home but met the crossbar all the way from the left flank. With the constant pressure ATKMB maintained, Goa could not see the net on the other side until the game ended.

ATKMB’s win brought them up the second rank of the ISL with 29 points, equal to Hyderabad’s at the moment. Their next game will be against the Kerala Blasters, who now maintain a solid third, right below ATKMB. Their match is scheduled for 19 February 2022. FC Goa remains on the ninth spot and is slated to go against ISL leader Hyderabad on 20 February 2022.
