Goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharja is travelling to Spain for a month-long training stint with Marbella FC, where he will seek to improve his preparation for the Indian Super League (ISL) season.

The Vancouver Whitecaps’ third-round pick (46th overall) in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft, Bhattacharja, is looking to improve his goalkeeping performance in the coming season having won the ISL Golden Glove award during the ISL 2020-21 season.

Josh Lambo made 29 saves in 11 matches for the Red and Gold team last season, at age 32.

“I’m going to Marbella in Spain for a month of training. I’ll be working with Marbella FC’s goalkeeping coach, who had a conversation with me. He wanted to see a few video clips of my training in order to get an impression on how I train in Kolkata. “I sent him some clippings of my training with several foreign coaches. He invited me to go and train with their first team after going through them,” Arindam Bhattacharja shared with the ISL Media crew.

“I have applied for the visa. Once it comes, I will leave for Marbella. I have to pay all the expenses for this training for one month,” he added.


The setup

The Marbella FC goalkeeper coach was reportedly impressed with what he saw and decided to offer the Indian stopper an opportunity to train with the first team.

Arindam Bhattacharja will be the second Indian player to join the Spanish club after former Mohun Bagan man Jeje Lalpekhlua, who trained there in December 2020.

The 27-year-old custodian, who started his professional career with East Bengal in the I-League, will be hoping to use the training stint as a springboard to success in the upcoming season.

He became the fourth Indian goalkeeper to join an overseas club on loan this season after Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (Stabaek), Kamaljit Singh (East Bengal) and Dheeraj Singh ( ATK Mohun Bagan).

It is understood that Arindam Bhattacharja will be spending a month with the club and will be working under the watchful eye of the club’s goalkeeping coach.

Marbella FC’s record in football

Marbella FC is a Spanish football club based in Marbella, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. The club currently plays in Segunda División B – Group 4, holding home matches at the Municipal de Marbella Stadium.

The club was founded in 1979 as Club Deportivo Marbella, being renamed Marbella Club de Fútbol in 1997. In its almost 40 years of history, the club has never played in any of the top two tiers of Spanish football.

However, Marbella FC has experienced some success in recent years, winning promotion to Segunda División B for the first time in 2013. The club has also reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey on two occasions, in 2004 and 2006.

Conclusion

There’s no doubt that Arindam Bhattacharja is a gifted footballer. The young Indian has already made a name for himself in his home country, and he’s now plying his trade with Marbella FC in Spain.

But can Arindam Bhattacharja continue to develop at Marbella FC?

With a large Spanish influence on the ISL, given the number of coaches from Spain that coach in the league, Arindam Bhattacharja is looking forward to learning from Spanish coaches at Marbella and getting helpful advice before the season begins.

“I have to prepare well. I asked my agents to arrange something for a better and proper training. They suggested me to go to Marbella FC, where I can train with them properly. I have worked under many Spanish coaches back home. So I think, I will be comfortable with a Spanish set up. I hope to prepare, as I expect there and come back with a good shape and a lot of confidence,” Arindam Bhattacharja said.

There’s no doubt that Arindam Bhattacharja has the talent to succeed at the highest level. However, it remains to be seen whether he will be given the opportunity to do so at Marbella FC.

Only time will tell whether Bhattacharja can develop into a top-class footballer at Marbella FC. However, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to do so.
