1-1 Draw Keeps ATK Mohun Bagan at 3rd Spot in the ISL

ATK Mohun Bagan FC failed to return to the second spot with their recent draw against Odisha FC at the Tilak Maidan game on Thursday. The game ended with a disappointing 1-1, courtesy of Redeem Tlang for Odisha and Joni Kauko from ATK Mohun Bagan. All goals were made in the first half, and the second half ended goalless, much to both teams’ chagrin.
ATK Mohun Bagan now sits still on the third spot of the Indian Super League, sharing 31 points with second placer Jamshedpur who has overtaken them in the ISL rankings of the late. The draw is particularly sour for ATK, as a win would have closed the gap between the current top team Hyderabad, but unfortunately, Odisha had other plans in mind. Odisha also remains stagnant at seventh with 23 points, just below Bengaluru and above Chennaiyin.

ATK Mohun Bagan Ties With Odisha

Odisha took the lead right from the start. Within the first five minutes, Redeem Tlang snatched the lead with the help of a low cross from midfielder Jerry Mawihmingthanga who sped through the right flank to open up the first goal.

Mohun Bagan found the equaliser with the same ease three minutes later due to a penalty on the part of Sahil Panwar, who clipped Hugo Boumous. Joni Kauko did not let the opportunity pass and secured the goal and levelled the scores.

Further penalties created opportunities for Odisha, particularly when Tiri tripped Aridai Suarez, but Javi Hernandez’s strike was blocked by ATK Mohun Bagan keeper Amrinder. Odisha continued to fight for a lead with Aridai and Tlang attempting to shoot in a goal with Javi’s long ball but ultimately failed to do so. Eventually, Javi was replaced by striker Daniel Lalhlimpuia.

ATK Mohun Bagan searched for any opportunities for the lead in the second half, with coach Juan Ferrando replacing Carl McHugh with Roy Krishna in an attempt to see different results. But despite the changes, the deadlock was maintained, and both sides ended the game with low spirits.

Despite the dissatisfying draw, ATK still remains within the top four, and the semifinals remain a close possibility. They will have their chance to change up their rankings against Bengaluru this 27 February, and Odisha will play against Jamshedpur on 4 March.
